FISHING IN PATAGONIA ARGENTINA

Southern Argentina, along the magnificent Cordillera de los Andes valleys is home of many streams, rivers, lakes and ponds. The quality of those ecosystems produces the best genetic wild Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis), Brown Trout (Salmo Fario) and Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) of the world. Also the Landlocked Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar Sebago) found its best environment in Lago Traful and Rio Traful region, where several world records were caught on fly.
In Patagonia Argentina do not exists artificial breeding nor hatcheries to keep trout populations, but the huge unspoiled and extremelly deep glacial lakes, which are the natural "nurseries" of those fantastic trout that run to the rivers and streams for spawning.
To keep that pure original trout, catch & release and flyfishing only, is the regulation for all the rivers of Patagonia Argentina.
Salmonids are incredible strong here and you must check your tackle constantly...the trophy of the trip will not give you second chances. Strong tippet/ leader material are always a rule. Fish grow sometimes really big, and sometimes in world- trophy category for the 3 species, thanks to the rich and pure waters, the very low fishing pressure and the absence of predators.

Season:
Not many fishermen come and enjoy Patagonia each fishing season if we compare water surface with anglers number. .
You can flyfish this region of Argentina for a week or more, without the presence of other anglers in the rivers, perhaps a few occasionally, during Summer vacations or during weekends. However you can be sure that they will be people like you, with a fly rod and searching for calm, beauty and trout. Of course, we need an entire human life to know and to fish all Patagonia, and perhaps that's not enough time. But at least you can decide to take your flyrod for one or two weeks, and enjoy the best trout fishing that our planet offers nowadays.
We'll show you all the possibilities and you choose what you like, what you prefer. If you are a 100% "dry-fly man", your best time in Patagonia is during Summer months.
The waters are lower than at the begining of Spring and Caddis, Mayflies, Stoneflies and Terrestrials in diverse size and color are the main menu for trout, specially in January and February. Of course is also good time for nymph fishers.
November/ December and March/ April are colder (not very) months, and time for big trout near bocas (mouths) of rivers that flow from or to the lakes. Big male and female trout are moving active for spawn. Streamer fishing with #5-#7 weight rods is the usual tackle on that moment. And float trips, offer one of the most productive options.

Horseback fishing trips:
But the possible adventures do not finish there...a day-long horseback flyfishing trip will show you another face of Argentina. At lunch, a tasty asado (local barbecue) of lamb or cow, with potatoes, salads, fruit, in the middle of the country. Then, a belly-boat fishing in a remote pond or in a high mountain lake "packed" with fat and voracious trout. Or perhaps a walk to the hidden spring creek.
